Bird-friendly coffee refers to a certification that ensures coffee is produced in a manner that supports the conservation of bird habitats and promotes biodiversity. It involves cultivating coffee under shade trees, which provides a natural habitat for birds and contributes to sustainable farming practices.
This coffee is sourced through an organization of family owned farms around Cooperative Multifuncional Family Coffee R.L. (COMULFAC) which was founded in 2013. The members of COMULFAC live within the department of Jinotega, Nicaragua. Farmer's cultivate coffee on farms which average 4 to 100 acres in size and they use their own micro-mill to process harvested cherries, which allows for meticulous care in depulping, fermenting, and drying. COMULFAC was established with assistance from the J&M family, a privately-owned export company in Jinotega, which has been purchasing coffee from these farmers for several years. The idea behind establishing a cooperative model was to help the farmer's organize their efforts and combine resources to develop social projects aimed at improving the quality of life in their communities.
